There’s no single “best” home EV charger — the right one depends on your home, your car, and how you charge. Rather than ranking products that change every year, this guide explains the features that actually matter so you can choose well, whatever’s on the market.

Start here: 7kW is right for almost everyone

For the vast majority of UK homes, a 7kW charger on a single-phase supply is the right choice — it’s the practical maximum on a standard domestic supply and fully charges most EVs overnight. So “best” is really about choosing the best 7kW smart charger for your situation.

The features that matter

1. Smart charging (essential). A smart charger schedules charging for cheap off-peak hours, can be controlled by app, and is required to meet current UK smart-charging regulations. This is the single biggest money-saver — overnight EV tariffs are a fraction of daytime rates.

2. Tethered vs untethered. Tethered has the cable attached (convenient, always there); untethered has a socket you plug your own cable into (tidier, futureproof, easy to replace). Neither is “better” — see our tethered vs untethered guide.

3. Load balancing / dynamic load management. Lets the charger automatically reduce its draw when the rest of the house is using power, avoiding overloading your supply. Valuable on homes with limited spare capacity — often the difference between needing a supply upgrade or not.

4. Solar integration. If you have (or plan) solar PV, look for a charger that can charge from surplus solar — charging your car for free from excess generation.

5. Build quality and weatherproofing. It lives outside — a proper IP-rated, durable unit matters.

6. Connectivity that works. Wi-Fi is standard; some offer cellular backup. A good app for scheduling and monitoring makes daily use easy.

7. Cable length (tethered). Make sure it reaches your car’s port from where the unit is mounted — think about which side your charge port is on.

What to (mostly) ignore

  • 22kW claims for home use — pointless without three-phase, and many EVs cap AC charging at 7–11kW anyway.
  • Headline “fastest charger” marketing — home AC charging is capped by your supply and your car, not the unit’s badge.
  • Over-speccing — you rarely need more than a good 7kW smart charger at home.

Match the charger to your situation

  • Standard home, one EV: a good 7kW smart charger, tethered for convenience.
  • Limited supply capacity: prioritise load balancing.
  • Solar owner: prioritise solar integration.
  • Multiple cars / future flexibility: untethered so you can swap cables.
  • No driveway / flat: the charger matters less than whether installation is feasible — get a survey first (and check the OZEV grant, which you may qualify for as a renter or flat owner).

A word on brands

There are several well-established UK EV charger brands, and most reputable 7kW smart units do the core job well. Rather than chase a specific “winner”, choose a charger that has the features above for your situation, from a manufacturer with good support and warranty — and have it fitted by a competent installer, which matters as much as the unit itself.
