
Most home electrical problems give you warning before they become dangerous — if you know what to look for. This is a practical guide to keeping your home’s electrics safe: the warning signs that matter, the everyday habits that prevent trouble, and the line between what you can do yourself and what needs an electrician.
The warning signs you should never ignore
Electrical faults often announce themselves. Treat any of these as a reason to act:
- A burning or fishy smell near sockets, switches, or the fuse box
- Scorch marks or discolouration around a socket or plug
- Sockets or switches that feel warm or hot to the touch
- Buzzing, crackling, or sizzling from outlets or the consumer unit
- Flickering or dimming lights that isn’t the bulb
- Breakers that keep tripping and won’t stay on
- A small shock or tingle off an appliance, tap, or switch
A burning smell, sparks, or smoke means switch off at the consumer unit and call an electrician — or 999 if there’s fire or someone’s been hurt.
Everyday habits that prevent problems
- Don’t overload sockets. Avoid daisy-chaining extension leads, and never plug one multi-way adaptor into another. High-power appliances (heaters, kettles, irons) should have their own socket.
- Check the rating on extension leads — a 13A lead can’t safely run several heaters at once. Unroll cable reels fully before use.
- Look after flexes. Replace frayed or damaged cables; don’t run them under rugs or where they’ll be trodden on.
- Keep water away from electrics. No appliances near sinks or baths, and dry hands before touching switches.
- Unplug chargers and small appliances when not in use, especially overnight.
Why RCD protection matters
An RCD (residual current device) is the single most important safety device in a modern home. It detects the tiny imbalance that happens when electricity leaks to earth — for example through a person — and cuts the power in milliseconds, fast enough to prevent a fatal shock. If your consumer unit is old and has no RCD protection, that’s a serious gap. Know your consumer unit
Find your fuse board and learn two things: where the main switch is (so you can kill all power in an emergency) and which breaker controls what. In a fault or flood, being able to isolate power quickly is genuinely valuable. If your board still uses rewireable fuses rather than breakers, it’s likely decades old and worth having assessed.
What you can do — and what you can’t
Safely DIY: changing a plug correctly, replacing a like-for-like bulb, resetting a tripped breaker once (if nothing is smoking or smelling).
Leave to a registered electrician: anything involving the fixed wiring — new circuits, consumer unit work, sockets and switches, anything in a bathroom or outdoors. Get a baseline check
If you’ve never had your home’s wiring inspected — or it’s been more than a decade — the best single thing you can do is get an EICR, a thorough inspection that finds problems before they become dangerous. It’s especially worth it for older homes and recent purchases.
