If you’re claiming the government EV chargepoint grant, one detail decides whether you actually get the money: using an OZEV-approved (authorised) installer. Here’s what that means, why it matters, and how to check.

What “OZEV-approved” means

OZEV is the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles — the government body behind the EV chargepoint grant. An OZEV-authorised installer is a company approved to install grant-eligible chargepoints and to submit grant claims on customers’ behalf.

It’s not just a quality badge — it’s the mechanism through which the grant is delivered. Only an authorised installer can process the grant for you.

Why you need one for the grant

The chargepoint grant (up to £500 per socket for eligible renters, flat owners, and landlords — see our OZEV grant guide) works like this:

1. You choose an OZEV-authorised installer.
2. They confirm your eligibility.
3. They install a grant-eligible chargepoint.
4. They claim the grant and deduct it from your bill.

If your installer isn’t authorised, you simply cannot get the grant through them — the saving disappears. So for anyone eligible, this is the single most important thing to check before booking.

It also signals competence

Beyond the grant, authorisation requires installers to meet standards — appropriate qualifications, registration with a competent-person scheme, and the ability to install to the regulations and notify the DNO. So an authorised installer is also a reassurance on quality and compliance, not just paperwork.

How to check an installer is authorised

• Ask directly — a genuine authorised installer will confirm and handle the grant claim for you.
• Check they’ll do the claim — they should apply on your behalf and show the deduction on your quote/invoice, not ask you to claim yourself.
• Confirm scheme registration — they should be registered with a competent-person scheme (e.g. NICEIC) and certify the work.
• Be wary of anyone vague about authorisation while still promising you “the grant”.

Do you even qualify for the grant?

Worth checking before you worry about installers: the grant is now limited to renters, flat owner-occupiers, and landlords with off-street/allocated parking — standard houses were removed in 2022.
