Fire & Smoke Alarm Installation in East London — NICEIC Electricians

fire & smoke alarm and niceic certified

Battery alarms that get pulled out the moment they chirp are not protection — and if you are a landlord, they are not compliance either. Properly installed, mains-powered, interlinked smoke and heat alarms mean that when one goes off, they all go off, giving everyone time to get out. GFL Electrical are NICEIC-approved electricians installing smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide alarm systems across East London for homeowners and landlords, wired and certified to standard.

Our fire & smoke alarm service

  • Mains-powered (hardwired) smoke and heat alarms with sealed battery backup
  • Interlinked systems — hardwired or wireless — so one trigger sounds them all
  • Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms for rooms with gas boilers, wood burners, or open fires
  • Correct placement to BS 5839-6 — the right alarm type in the right location on every storey
  • Landlord compliance installs and upgrades to meet the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Regulations
  • Testing and certification of the installation

Why it matters — and the rules

Since the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Amendment) Regulations 2022 (in force from 1 October 2022), rented homes in England must have:

  • At least one smoke alarm on every storey with a habitable room, and
  • A CO alarm in any room with a carbon-fuelled appliance (gas boiler, wood burner, open fire).

Landlords are responsible for repairing or replacing alarms once told of a fault, and non-compliance can mean fines of up to £5,000. Interlinking and mains-powered systems go beyond the bare minimum but are the gold standard for safety — and the most reliable way to keep tenants protected and yourself compliant.

Why choose GFL Electrical

  • NICEIC approved — installed and certified to UK standards.
  • Correct grade and placement — we install to BS 5839-6, with the right detector (optical, heat, multi-sensor) in the right place, not just an alarm slapped on a ceiling.
  • Interlinked done properly — hardwired or wireless, so the whole system responds together.
  • Landlord-ready paperwork — certification you can show tenants, agents, and your insurer.

How it works

  1. Tell us the property — number of storeys, appliances (gas, solid fuel), and whether it’s a rental.
  2. We design the system — alarm types and placement to meet the regulations and BS 5839-6.
  3. We install and interlink — mains-powered with battery backup, hardwired or wireless interlink.
  4. We test and certify — and show you how it works.

What it costs

Cost depends on the number of alarms, the property size, and whether they are hardwired or wireless-interlinked. A small flat needs fewer units than a three-storey house, and hardwiring costs more than wireless-interlinked but is the most robust. We will give you a clear quote based on your property before starting.

Frequently asked questions

What are the smoke alarm rules for landlords? Rented homes in England need at least one smoke alarm on every storey with a habitable room, plus a CO alarm in any room with a carbon-fuelled appliance. Landlords must repair or replace faulty alarms once notified, with fines up to £5,000 for non-compliance.

Do smoke alarms have to be mains-powered? The regulations require working alarms; mains-powered (hardwired) alarms with battery backup are the most reliable and the standard we recommend, as tenants cannot simply remove the battery.

What does interlinked mean? Interlinked alarms — hardwired or wireless — all sound together when any one is triggered, so you are warned wherever you are in the property. It is the gold standard for early warning.

Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm? Yes if you have a carbon-fuelled appliance (gas boiler, wood burner, open fire) in a room — a CO alarm is required there for rented homes and strongly advised for any home.

Where should alarms go? We install to BS 5839-6 — the correct alarm type and location on each storey, including heat alarms in kitchens. We design the layout for your specific property.

Will I get a certificate? Yes — we test and certify the installation, giving you paperwork you can show tenants, agents, and insurers.
