If your fuse box trips constantly, buzzes, still uses old rewireable fuses, or has no test button at all, it is time to think about a replacement — and if there is a burning smell, do not wait, treat it as an emergency. GFL Electrical are NICEIC-approved electricians replacing fuse boxes (consumer units) across East London, with the work certified under Part P. We will tell you honestly whether it is urgent and what it will cost.
Our fuse box replacement service
We replace old and unsafe consumer units with modern boards that give proper protection against fire and electric shock. A replacement includes:
- Removing the old board and assessing the existing circuits, earthing, and bonding
- Fitting a new metal-clad consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection
- Connecting each circuit to its protective device and labelling the board
- Testing every circuit — insulation resistance, RCD operation, polarity, continuity
- Certification — an Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P notification
If any earthing, bonding, or wiring is found to be unsafe during the swap, we will flag it before doing the work, not surprise you with it afterwards.
RCD or RCBO?
We will explain both, but in short: an RCBO board gives every circuit its own protection, so a single fault trips only that circuit instead of half the house. It costs a little more than a dual-RCD board but is what most homes are best served by today — especially with EV chargers, home offices, and freezers in the mix. For the full comparison and costs, see our fuse box replacement guide.
Why choose GFL Electrical
- NICEIC approved — we self-certify the Part P work and issue your certificate.
- Honest about urgency — if it is a “plan and budget” job rather than an emergency, we will say so. If there is a burning smell or buzzing, we will tell you to act now.
- Clear, all-in pricing — board type, what is included, testing, and certification stated up front.
- Around 40 years of combined experience, domestic and commercial.
How it works
- Tell us what’s happening — tripping, buzzing, old fuses, a survey flag, or a failed EICR.
- We quote clearly — board type (RCD or RCBO), what is included, and the price.
- Replacement day — usually a half-day (3–5 hours), with the power off for most of it.
- Test and certify — every circuit tested, board labelled, certificate issued and notified under Part P.
What it costs
A replacement is priced by board type and the number of circuits: roughly £500–£800 for a dual-RCD board and £800–£1,200 for a full RCBO board, including testing and Part P sign-off, with London at the higher end. Extra circuits or remedial work (earthing, bonding, unsafe wiring) add to it — and we will always flag that before starting. Full cost detail is in our guide.
Not sure if you need one?
If a surveyor flagged “older consumer unit” or you are unsure whether the board is dangerous or simply old, an EICR assesses the real condition and tells you whether a replacement is genuinely needed.
Areas we cover
We replace fuse boards across East London — Leyton, Walthamstow, Leytonstone, and the surrounding boroughs including Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, and Redbridge. See our areas page or ask when you get in touch.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace a fuse box? Around £500–£800 for a dual-RCD board and £800–£1,200 for a full RCBO board, including testing and Part P sign-off. London is at the higher end; extra circuits or remedial work add to it.
RCD or RCBO — which is better? RCBO for most homes — each circuit gets its own protection so a fault trips only that circuit. It costs a little more but is worth it.
How long does it take? Usually a half-day (3–5 hours), with the power off for most of the job.
Do I get a certificate? Yes — replacing a consumer unit is notifiable under Part P, so you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate and we notify the work.
Is my old fuse box dangerous? Rewireable fuses and no RCD protection mean it lacks modern safety features — worth replacing even if nothing is actively failing. A burning smell or buzzing, though, is urgent.
My survey says “older consumer unit.” Do I have to replace it now? Not necessarily. Without a burning smell, buzzing, or tripping it may be a plan-ahead job — an EICR confirms the actual condition.
