In Hackney, three-phase power tends to come up around the borough’s creative studios, workshops, and warehouse conversions — and occasionally high-demand homes. GFL Electrical design and install three-phase supplies and single-to-three-phase upgrades across Hackney.
What three-phase is, and when you need it
Standard homes run on single-phase. Three-phase (around 400V) delivers much more power and is needed when demand is high — typically:
- Workshop and studio machinery — kilns, large compressors, professional equipment
- Warehouse/industrial conversions running heavy loads
- High-demand homes combining a heat pump, a 22kW EV charger, and significant battery storage
- Commercial kitchens and bigger HVAC
Hackney’s three-phase demand
- Creative studios and makers — Hackney Wick, Haggerston, and similar areas have plenty of studios with equipment that single-phase can’t comfortably run.
- Warehouse conversions — characterful spaces that may already have, or need, three-phase.
- High-demand homes — where heat pumps and big EV chargers stack up; see our heat pump electrical guidance.
The upgrade process
Going from single- to three-phase involves your DNO (the network operator that owns the street cables): we assess your needs, apply to the DNO for the supply, and install the three-phase board and circuits to BS 7671. We handle the DNO liaison so you don’t have to.
See our main three-phase installation service.
Common questions about three-phase in Hackney
My studio’s machinery keeps tripping — do I need three-phase? Possibly — if single-phase can’t supply the load, three-phase is the proper fix; we’ll assess demand first.
Can my warehouse conversion get three-phase? Often yes — many already have a supply nearby; we check with the DNO and install.
How long does an upgrade take? The install is quick; the DNO lead time varies — we manage the application and timeline for you.
