In Wanstead, three-phase power is mostly a story of large period homes going all-electric — stacking a heat pump, a fast EV charger, and battery storage until single-phase no longer copes. GFL Electrical design and install three-phase supplies and single-to-three-phase upgrades across Wanstead, Snaresbrook, and South Woodford (E11/E18).
What three-phase is, and when you need it
Homes usually run single-phase; three-phase (around 400V) supplies far more power, needed when demand is high:
- Heat pumps (especially larger or ground-source systems)
- 22kW EV chargers (faster than the standard 7kW)
- Big battery storage combined with the above
- Workshop or studio machinery at home
Wanstead’s three-phase demand
- Large period homes — the substantial houses around Wanstead and Snaresbrook are exactly the properties undertaking deep green retrofits where combined loads can exceed single-phase. See our heat pump electrical guidance.
- Home workshops and studios with heavier equipment.
The upgrade process
Single- to three-phase involves the DNO: we assess your total load, apply to the DNO for the supply, and install the three-phase board and circuits to BS 7671 — handling the DNO liaison and keeping the work tidy in a quality home.
See our main three-phase installation service.
Common questions about three-phase in Wanstead
My home is going all-electric — will I need three-phase? Possibly — if the heat pump, 22kW charger, and battery together exceed single-phase, yes; we assess total demand first.
Is the upgrade disruptive in a period home? We keep it tidy and well-planned; the main variable is the DNO lead time, which we manage.
Do I need three-phase for a standard 7kW charger? No — single-phase is fine; three-phase is for 22kW or stacked loads.
