A burning smell from a socket, plug, switch, or your fuse box is one of the clearest electrical warning signs there is — and it should never be ignored or “kept an eye on”. This guide tells you what to do right now, what’s likely causing it, and why speed matters.

Do this immediately

If you can smell burning from electrics:

  1. Switch off the appliance or circuit if you can identify it — or turn off the main switch on the consumer unit to kill power to the property.
  2. Unplug the suspected appliance, if it’s safe and dry to do so.
  3. Don’t use the socket, switch, or appliance again until it’s checked.
  4. If you see smoke, sparks, or flames, get everyone out and call 999.
  5. Call a qualified electrician to find and fix the cause.

A burning smell means something is already overheating — acting fast can prevent a fire.

What that smell usually means

Electrical burning smells are often described as “fishy”, “acrid plastic”, or “hot”. Common causes:

  • A loose connection. Loose terminals at a socket, switch, or in the consumer unit cause arcing and heat — the most common cause. Standard breakers don’t always catch this (it’s exactly what AFDDs are designed for).
  • An overloaded socket or circuit. Too much load — daisy-chained extension leads, multiple heaters — overheats the wiring and fittings.
  • A faulty appliance or charger. A failing device can overheat its plug or the socket.
  • Damaged or degraded wiring. Old, perished insulation or damaged cable overheating.
  • Water ingress causing arcing.

Why a “fishy” smell is a classic warning

That distinctive fishy or urine-like smell is often overheating plastic components in sockets, switches, or the consumer unit. It’s a recognised early sign of an electrical fault and shouldn’t be dismissed as something else in the house.

Why you can’t just monitor it

Overheating connections get worse, not better — heat damages insulation, which increases resistance, which creates more heat. By the time there’s a visible scorch mark, it’s been developing for a while. A burning smell is the point to act, not to wait and see.

What an electrician will do

They’ll trace the source — often a specific socket, switch, or a terminal in the consumer unit — and check for loose connections, signs of overheating, overload, and damaged cable. They’ll repair or replace the affected components and test the circuit. If the board itself is involved or shows heat damage, they may recommend a consumer unit replacement. If the problem reflects widespread ageing wiring, they may discuss a rewire.

Prevention

  • Don’t overload sockets or daisy-chain extension leads.
  • Replace damaged plugs, flexes, and fittings promptly.
