You’ve gone electric (or you’re about to) and want a proper home charger — but the quotes vary and the grant rules have changed, so it’s hard to know what’s fair. Here’s what an EV charger installation actually costs in 2026, what’s included, who can still get a grant, and the things that legitimately push the price up.

What does a home EV charger cost to install?

For a standard home installation, expect roughly £700–£1,200 all-in — that’s the charger unit plus labour, materials, and the DNO notification. A typical 7kW untethered smart charger on a straightforward job sits at the lower-to-middle of that range.

What’s included in a proper quote: the wallbox, a dedicated circuit with the correct protective device, the cable run, commissioning the unit and its app, testing, and an Electrical Installation Certificate for the new circuit.

7kW vs 22kW — and why it affects cost

• 7kW is the standard home charger, runs on a normal single-phase supply, and fully charges most cars overnight. This is the £700–£1,200 figure above.
• 22kW charges faster but needs a three-phase supply, which most homes don’t have. If you need a three-phase upgrade first, that’s a separate and much larger cost — so for nearly all homes, 7kW is the sensible choice.

Commercial installs (workplaces, multiple bays, fleet) are quoted on the site — number of chargepoints, load management, and supply capacity.

The OZEV grant — who still qualifies

This is the part that’s changed and trips people up. The OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant covers 75% of cost, up to £500 per socket — but eligibility is now limited to renters, flat owners (leasehold/share of freehold), and landlords installing for tenants. Most homeowners with a driveway no longer qualify.

If you are eligible, two rules matter: you must use an OZEV-approved installer, and you must apply and be approved before installation (having it fitted first makes you ineligible). We’ll tell you honestly whether the grant applies to you rather than dangle a saving you can’t claim.

What pushes the price up

• Long or awkward cable runs — e.g. taking a cable underground to a detached garage.
• A consumer unit upgrade if your board can’t safely take the EV circuit.
• Difficult routing through thick walls or to a distant parking space.
• Location — London sits at the higher end.
